The Salt Lake Valley extends 22 miles (35 km) east to west, 25 miles (20 km) north to south and is bordered on the east by the Wasatch ('Mountains of many waters') Range, on the west by the Oquirrh ('Shining Mount') Mountains, and on the northwest by Great Salt Lake. Salt Lake City is a major processing center for the products of an irrigated farm region that is also rich in minerals such as silver, lead, and copper. Tourism, with numerous ski resorts located within an hour’s drive, is also a major industry.
